What is FitFENCE?
fitFENCE is a Sporting Dreams School Sports Program and it provides children with a fun and safe introduction to the skills required in fencing. The program aims to give children a “WOW, that was an amazing experience, can we do it again?“.
We have split the program into 3 stages:
- Stage 1: Foam Foils/Epees/Sabers/Swords
- Stage 2: Plastic Foils
- Stage 3: Duels & Matches
What is Olympic Fencing?
Show your children 2 minutes of this video below of Olympic Fencing.
Is fencing Safe?
Yes. We first teach children the basic skills and techniques using foam swords, and then when we are confident in the children’s ability to follow instructions and play safely, key stage 2 usually go on to level 2 and use the plastic swords and masks. Usually, children aged 4-7years old will mainly use foam swords and masks and 8years+ will go on to use the plastic swords and masks once they have passed level 1 of our program.
Our staff use a firm but fair coaching style and start off all the lessons by reinforcing what we expect in terms of behaviour, listening skills, following instructions and explaining the strategies we use to get the children’s attention.
Please take a look at our history and about us page, where you can read a little about our coaching methodology, our approach and our use of discipline. These are vitally important to create and maintain a fun, safe and efficient learning environment for the children.
What skills do the children develop?
We teach all the basic skills, movements and terminology used in fencing and introduce children and teachers to the concepts of attacking, defending and develop their co-ordination of hands and feet through a variety of exciting games and exercises. The program is also great at;
- Developing Self-esteem
- Building Confidence
- Improving Balance
- Developing Motor skills
- Improving reactions and response time
- Developing eye-hand and feet coordination
- Developing an understanding on the use of fakes and faints to create space and predicting opponents’ movements.
- The program can also help children to understand the importance of discipline and listening skills which are important to maintain a safe environment.
